Expedition Overview
Illiniza is a no longer active stratovolcano in Ecuador. It is located approximately 55 km southwest of Quito in the Western Cordillera of the Andes. Of its two peaks, the southern one, Iliniza Sur, 5245 m (left in the picture), is covered by a glacier, the northern one, Illiniza Norte, 5126 m/16,813ft, is a pure rock peak. There is a small refuge in the saddle between these two mountains, called “Nuevos Horizontes”.
Climbing Iliniza Norte is a great goal for beginner mountaineers/climbers heading to Ecuador. It is also incredibly popular as an acclimatization climb for those wanting to push even higher and climb on one of Ecuador's infamous glaciated peaks like Cotopaxi or Cayambe.

Itinerary
We leave from Quito (9,186 ft / 2.800 m) in the morning and will drive through the Avenue of the Volcanoes until getting to the village of “El Chaupi”. We’ll continue driving up until getting to “La Virgen parking lot (12,795 ft / 3.900 m). There will be waiting horses for carrying our stuff up to the refuge. Once there we’ll start a 3-hour hike up to the “Nuevos Horizontes Refuge”, where we will relax the rest of the afternoon. Dinner will be served by late afternoon. Overnight at the hut.
Our climbing day starts before the sunrise. We will have a light breakfast, pack our climbing equipment and leave the refuge an hour later. We will continue hiking up towards the saddle formed between both peaks and then to Iliniza Norte summit (16,818ft/5.126m) soon after. The approaching to the top involves an easy 3 hour srambling. Once at the summit we will enjoy and admire the beautiful surroundings. The return back to the parking lot will be done in around 3 hours. Horses will bring our stuff down to the parking lot. Drive back to Quito. Overnight: Hotel.
